One of the most spectacular things to see on the Central Coast are the Elephant Seals at the Piedras Blancas Northern Elephant Seal Rookery Viewing Area (about 4.5 miles north of the Hearst Castle on Route 1). Seeing these mammoth animals (males weighing 2 tons) fight for territorial rights, the females giving birth and new new pups shedding the skins is wildlife close up. Now the California Depart of Parks and Recreation has launched a new guided tour at the Hearst San Simeon State Park. Beginning January 4 through the end of March, these tours will truly give you a new level of experience into the lifecycle of these spectacular animals.
